Andover Central won the event with 20 points. Wichita Trinity had 13, Winfield 9, Pratt 7 and Wellington 5. There were nine teams in the tournament. In boys singles, Wellington took two freshmen, Will Long and Edwards. Long was unseated and lost to Ethan Sharp of Pratt in a feeder match and was eliminated.Edwards came in as the No. 5 seed and beat A. Araiza of Scott City in the first round before losing to M. Wakefield of Andover Central in the quarterfinals.Going to the consolation bracket, the best Brock could do was to finish fifth or sixth. This meant he would have to win his first match in consolation. He did just that beating D. Dieckhoff of Wichita Trinity in three sets.“Brock played the best tennis he has played this season,” said Allen Keller, Wellington head tennis coach. “Brock is a very cool customer and his ability to maintain a positive attitude during pressure situations was the difference in the match.”In the match for fifth place, Brock lost to M. Schiferl, a very good player from Colby, who came into the tournament with a record of 20 wins and two losses. In the boys doubles, only the best 10 teams were seeded and the remaining 10 were drawn. Jon Ryberg and Weston Driskell were fortunate to miss the feeder round, but got the worst possible draw in the first round by drawing No. 16 and having to play C. Davis and J. Thompson of Andover Central. After that loss, they were eliminated.Brownlee and Pettegrew were able to get a No. 5 seed and lived up to that reputation by beating Brunson and Womach of Wichita Trinity in the first round. In the next round, they lost a gut-wrenching three-set match to an Andover Central team of J. Murray and M. Flynn. Again in order to qualify for the state tournament, they would have to regroup and win their first match in consolation which they did against a stubborn team of D. Hutchins and B. Hess from Scott County. In the match for fifth place, Brownlee/Pettegrew were able to get revenge in a close three-set match against Tanner Boyle and C. Haney from Winfield, who had just beat them the week before in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. III and IV tournament in Wichita.“Dutch and Tyler showed off their shot making ability and kept great concentration in this effort,” Keller said. “This win was huge due to all the wins Winfield has over some very good teams that will be at the state tournament that Wellington now has indirect wins over. The Class 4A tournament will be played at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center in Winfield. The tennis match begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday and will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. Team trophies will be presented to the top three teams and medal presentations to the top 12 singles and doubles participants.Follow us on Twitter.
