Special Teams Player of the Week: Bailey Raborn – Jr. – Punter – Lafayette, La.In his debut as the Pokes’ primary punter, Raborn booted six punts for an average of 45.5 yards, good for 10th-best among FCS punters. Three of his kicks resulted in muffed punts with a pair of them recovered by McNeese. Raborn pinned the Jaguars inside the 20-yard line on two punts and inside the 25-yard line on four kicks. His longest went for 56 yards and he booted another for 54 yards. The Bears completed a 35-28 comeback victory on the road over FBS foe Western Kentucky Thursday, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. UCA stays on the road in week two and is set to face Austin Peay at 2 p.m. Saturday in Clarksville, Tenn. Offensive Player of the Week: Lujuan Winningham – So. – Wide Receiver – Humble, TexasWinningham caught eight passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns, which are both career highs. His three scoring grabs were for 23, 20 and 80 yards, the last of which tied the game in the fourth quarter. Winningham’s 222 receiving yards were the most by an FCS wideout through opening weeknd and went down as the fourth-most in a single game in program history. Honorable Mention: Shelton Eppler, Northwestern State; Jordan Hoy, Lamar; Devonte Williams, Southeastern Louisiana; Bailey Zappe, Houston Baptist. Defensive Player of the Week: Robert Rochell – Jr. – Cornerback – Shreveport, La.Rochell made seven total tackles, including five solo stops, to go along with an interception and two pass breakups in the upset of the Hilltoppers. Trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, he made a diving interception to halt WKU’s drive at the Bears’ 30-yard line. Rochell recorded one of his pass break ups on the Hilltoppers’ final drive, which ended on downs with just under a minute left. Honorable Mention: Caleb Johnson, Houston Baptist; Mike Mason, Southeastern Louisiana. The Cowboys started the Sterlin Gilbert era out on the right foot, defeating Southern 34-28 on Saturday. McNeese travels to Stillwater, Okla., to take on Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. Saturday. Winningham, a sophomore wide receiver, picked up Offensive Player of the Week while teammate Rochell, a junior cornerback, secured defensive honors. Junior punter Raborn secured the first Special Teams Player of the Week honor of the year. FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas’ Lujuan Winningham and Robert Rochell, along with McNeese’s Bailey Raborn, earned the first weekly awards of the 2019 season, the league announced Tuesday. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank. Honorable Mention: Austin Dunlap, Southeastern Louisiana; Hayden Ray, Central Arkansas. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted.
